Abstract : Forty pre-pubertal Hebsi male goat kids with an average body weight of 20kg (±1.68kg) at the age of five months were used. The animals were randomly assigned into two treatment groups to determine the effect of arginine supplementation on age, semen characteristics and testosterone concentrations at puberty. In the treated group, the animals were fed individual ration containing 0.2gm/kg body weight/day protected arginine mixed with concentrates until the age of 8 months. In the control group, the animals received the same diet without arginine supplementation. Body weight was measured weekly until the age of 8 months and once again at the age of 2 years. Semen was collected twice weekly until the age of 8 months and once again at the age of 2 years for the determination of semen characteristics and testosterone levels. Results from the present study show that supplementation of protected arginine to pre-pubertal Hebsi male goat kids significantly (P<0.05) accelerated the puberty age in treated animals as compared to control (6.25±0.25 and 7.5±0.02 months, respectively). Testosterone concentrations were also found to be significantly (P<0.05) higher in treated animals as they approach the age of puberty compared to control (3.15±0.11 and 1.10±0.24 ng/ml, respectively). No significant differences were found between the two groups in regard to body weight and semen characteristics at the age of puberty. These results indicate that protected arginine supplemental feeding to pre-pubertal Hebsi male goat kids resulted in the advancement of the age at puberty, probably through the indirect effect of arginine on testosterone secretion and consequently spermatogenesis.
